Amalotus

September 2024, Courtney

I travelled through Vietnam and Cambodia with Travelmarvel along the Mekong River onboard the RV Apsara (formerly RV Amalotus). I had a Category C cabin on Deck 1, which featured both a French balcony and an outside balcony, along with a spacious bathroom.

We visited four ports in Vietnam, where we learned about the country’s history, explored local markets, and visited silk factories and manufacturers of coconut candy and rice paper. One highlight was a rickshaw tour of a town largely untouched by tourism.

In Cambodia, we stopped at five ports, including two nights in Phnom Penh, which allowed us plenty of time to explore the capital city at our own pace. We toured the Killing Fields & Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, gaining insight into the country’s difficult history. We also visited the spectacular Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, experienced a traditional Buddhist blessing, and explored local villages by tuk-tuk.

The food onboard was excellent, offering a diverse menu that catered to all tastes. Guests could enjoy a variety of Asian & Western dishes, ensuring there was something for everyone. The crew was attentive to dietary needs, accommodating allergies and preferences with ease.

Each evening featured different entertainment, from movie nights to karaoke & trivia; the staff talent show was definitely a highlight for many guests! The crew did a great job of getting everyone involved, creating a lively atmosphere that made each night memorable.

I spent three nights in Ho Chi Minh City pre cruise, which gave me time to explore the city at my own pace and enjoy a local food tour by scooter. Post-cruise, I had only one night in Siem Reap, but this was enough time to visit Angkor Wat and other temples, as well as explore and dine at Pub Street. I highly recommend spending some time before and after the cruise to explore more of Vietnam and Cambodia!
